『At The Riverside』(1990)


cormorants on boats
going upstream--
actors on a stage


上流へ向かう/舟の上の鵜/舞台の役者
thunder in the distance
a shrimp jumping up
in the kitchen

遠雷に小エビ跳ねたる厨かな
the half moon
perching on my shoulder
leads me forward

半月が肩にとまり先導す
shiny icicles
spread their roots
from the flowerless pot

花なき鉢から根を広げたり輝くつらら

I pull out
spring, too


雑草を抜く春も抜き取る
spring passing
an hourglass
motionless

行春/砂時計/動かず

moonlit night
a cat on the roof
philosophizing

月明かり/屋根の上の猫/哲学者
through the key hole
first winter air
comes in

鍵穴を抜けて寒気団迫り来る

a young priest going into--
no return


春霞入りて戻らぬ修行僧
after the argument
two gazing at
the yellow freesia

口論の果てフリージャの黄みる二人
a smell of jasmine tea
drifting after love
rainy cottage

恋のあとジャスミン茶香る雨の小屋
powder snow
on the Tom cat's tail
shiny crystallized

粉雪が猫の尾っぽに結晶す

『A Desert Rose』(2002)

being fresh green
of his whole body
a boy is rolling around

全身をさみどりにして転がる子
in a carpet of poppies
I wonder Alice is
here and there


群生のポピーの原にアリスいて
the desert spreads
in the depth of teeth
the color of roses


歯の奥で広がる砂漠薔薇の色
a row of daffodils
an old couple shares their time
yet different ways

水仙や平行線の老い二人

a pink seashell
of the Indian Ocean
recalls my native seashore

故郷の海呼びおこす桜貝
a cute house cat
leaves ticks
on my bed


家猫の虱残すやわが臥所
a snake in the Swan River
enriches the land --
a legend of the aborigines

蛇が産む先住民の大地かな
backpackers
and autumn breeze
on the river shuttle

パッカーも秋風も乗る渡し舟

a kitten in the cage
left on the bus stop--
spring moon

バス停に子猫残され春の月
a shadow
of a honeybee on the Shouji
warms me


あたたかや障子に映る蜂の影
a toad croaking
beyond
the horizon


蛙鳴く地平線を越えゆけり
iris pond --
the way of wind
purple

菖蒲池むらさき色の風の道
his coming
earlier than usual --
a halo round the moon

いつもより早い帰宅や月の暈
Indian summer
everyone becomes a boy
digging the fossil out

化石採り少年になる小春かな
Christmas --
leaf through the book
with his large-boned fingers

骨太の指で辞書くるクリスマス
my sixtieth birthday--
a pair of jeans
my present to myself


還暦やジーンズという贈りもの

『elephant's eyes』(2007)

like elephant's eyes
spring moon
heals my sorrow

春の月悲しみを癒す象に似て
bright spring --
such as your ignorance
about flowers


うららかや例えば君の花音痴
baseball kid
catches and throws
a cloudy sky


野球の子曇天つかみ投げかえす
early summer --
my footsteps lightly
at the cathedral


初夏や靴音軽き大伽藍
summer end --
single page
of the fish-eye lens

夏終わる魚眼レンズの一頁
no one knows
where she moves --
cosmos flowers swaying


転居先教えぬ人や秋桜
sounds of autumn
rolling about
at the terminal station

秋の音転がっている始発駅
each seventeen-year boy
goes out from his birthplace
always winter day


家を出る十七歳はいつも冬
